A large Canadian trial finds annual mammograms for women over 50 did not reduce breast cancer deaths compared with thorough annual physical breast examinations. With 39,405 participants aged 50 to 59, deaths were 107 in the mammography group and 105 in the physical exam group after follow up.
A study of 39,405 women aged 50 to 59 followed 13 years finds annual mammograms plus physical exams do not lower deaths from cancer compared with physical exams alone. Initial screening found 267 invasive cancers and in-place tumors were also counted. results come from Journal of the National Cancer AP Institute.
