Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard will meet for the welterweight championship of the world Wednesday night at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Both boxers spoke with reporters in Las Vegas on Monday as promotion for the title fight continued.
Seven Phillips Petroleum employees were burned and trapped by a trio of explosions while shutting down the 52 year old Goldsmith refinery for inspection and repairs. They were hospitalized with first through third degree burns, and one man was later released after treatment. Authorities said the main natural gas processing line was not in danger, and the fire was under control with no imminent risk to the public. Local fire crews assisted but were kept off site while Phillips crews battled the flames.
President Reagan's adviser notes savers can now obtain a real rate of return above 7 percent as consumer prices rise about 10 percent annually while savers face rates over 17 percent. Economists call it the highest real return margin in U.S. history.
