Federal judge blocks parts of Texas abortion sonogram law
U.S. Judge Sam Sparks, appointed by George H W Bush, blocked key provisions of Texas new abortion sonogram law while preserving the preabortion sonogram requirement. He struck down the physician duty to perform and present the image, and the paternity and child support disclosure mandate as unconstitutional. The ruling cites First Amendment protections for both doctors and patients and leaves a 24 hour waiting period in place. Abbott said the state would appeal.

Who Really Kept Us Safe After 9 11
A reflection on terrorism after 9/11 notes initial fears of widespread attacks in the United States. It credits law enforcement, the Afghanistan war, and the Bush administration, but highlights a surprising factor: American Muslims. The piece cites studies showing low domestic extremist activity among Muslims, with few convictions or plots attributed to al Qaida, and argues Muslims in the U S largely reject extremism and value democracy.
