Flagstaff program shows fire prevention mix of success and controversy
In 1996 wildfires near Flagstaff prompted the Grand Canyon Forests Partnership to thin woods and use prescribed burns to restore the forest. Backed by officials and researchers, the effort faces lawsuits and opposition over tree removal but aims to cut fire risk by thinning, meadow restoration, and controlled burns across about 100,000 acres over 10 to 15 years with a $27 million price tag.
