Swiss Alps rail tunnel bids to shorten Europe’s north south link
Workers carve the Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland as the world’s longest rail tunnel, stretching 36 miles from Erstfeld to Bodio. Set for 2012 completion at over 10 billion francs, it will cut travel times, boost freight capacity, and handle passenger trains up to 155 mph, with safety emphasized after last year’s Mont Blanc fire tragedy.
