House fails to override Clinton veto on estate tax repeal
In a 274 to 157 vote, the Republican led House fell 14 short of a two thirds majority to override President Clinton's veto of the estate tax repeal. 13 Democrats switched sides. 53 Democrats joined most Republicans for the override, while Clinton argued the bill mainly benefits the well off and would strain programs.
