In Houston the first grade at an all white elementary school welcomed Tyronne Raymond Day, a six year old, as the initial pupil under Judge Connally’s integration plan. Day entered at 9:02 a.m. escorted by his father and Dr Charles Nelson with 22 Negro children seeking entry.
Philadelphia reports the Pennsylvania Railroad entered its second week of shutdown as maintenance workers walk out. Freight shifted to rival lines, raising costs while the crisis threatens layoffs in the PRR service area. Transport Workers Union press for offers, TWU president Michael J.
