Arizona considered for major observatory
Mount Graham in the Pinaleno Mountains southwest of Safford Arizona is under study as a site for a new giant observatory. Jointly examined by the University of Arizona and the Smithsonian Institution the project could reach a 120 million dollar scale with upgrades to Mount Hopkins telescope prototypes and collaboration with Texas California and Kitt Peak National Observatory. The site offers high elevation very low light pollution and minimal atmospheric water vapor making it a leading candidate for a new generation of extremely powerful telescopes.
