Eco-terrorism spike as ELF claims Vail arsons
The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility for seven fires on Vail Mountain that damaged three buildings and four chairlifts in an attack estimated at $12 million. The Human Genome Project plans to complete a high quality map of human DNA by the end of 2003, two years ahead of schedule. Francis S. Collins and federal agencies estimate 70 percent of work will be done by DOE and NIH, with international partners and the Sanger Centre contributing the rest. A new map showing 30,181 genes is published in Science. Separately, researchers report sequencing the full gene structure of Chlamydia trachomatis, aiding vaccine and diagnostic development.

Yo-yo lands court spectator in jail for 2 days
In Oklahoma City AP report Judge Nancy Coats jailed 34 year old Charles Knost for two days for contempt after he played with a yo-yo in her courtroom. The judge said the act was totally inappropriate for a courtroom and she was startled as the yo-yo flew toward the ceiling while a defendant sat nearby. Knost said he only played while nervous after quitting smoking.
