Illinois to hear clemency pleas for death row inmates
Illinois began nine days of clemency hearings for most of its death row inmates as Gov. Ryan nears leaving office. Victor Brooks opened the sessions apologizing to victims families, while a grieving relative left in tears after Leonard Kidd’s case was discussed. Attorneys argued Kidd is mentally retarded and that police torture tainted the case.
