Pentagon to send soldiers to Nigeria for training mission
The Pentagon will deploy 250 soldiers this week to Nigeria for an indefinite stay to train Nigerian battalions for peacekeeping in West Africa. The United States aims to train up to five West African battalions for the U.N. Sierra Leone mission. Rear Adm. Craig Quigley said the first group leaves Fort Bragg, joining European units, to teach tactics, weapons, and communications, with human rights guidance. A small US team has operated in Nigeria since just before President Clinton’s August visit. Since 1992, U.S. involvement in Africa has focused on training rather than direct intervention.
