First contact with rare mountain gorillas after a year
Scientists report two groups of protected mountain gorillas near the Rwanda Congo border in good condition after being driven out by rebel fighting since late 1997. A infant was observed among the groups, with researchers hopeful others survived amid war and poaching pressures in Virungas and Bwindi forests.

Firefighter Fired Over July Break-In At Publix During Wildfire
Fire chief Ruggeri ordered a wildfire crew to break into Publix Super Market to rest and shelter gear during evacuations. Ruggeri claimed sheriff knew of the break-in and crews kept inventory. Publix did not file a complaint as Ruggeri ran for a county commission seat lost in September. The store was closed amid mandatory evacuation and Ruggeri directed a door be pushed in July 4. His 24 firefighters slept in shifts inside the air conditioned store.

Two Gary City Hall workers accused in cocaine ring
Gary Indiana FBI says Arthur L. Harris, chief computer programmer, and Karen Laverne Shivers, payroll clerk, ran a cocaine ring from City Hall. They dealt on city phones, delivered during lunch, with about six ounces crack and five ounces powder cocaine found. Harris boasted of $1,000 daily sales. Shivers jailed on crack house charge. both suspended.

Drug adds ipratropium curb severe child asthma hospitalizations
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine finds adding ipratropium bromide to albuterol and steroids reduces hospitalization risk by 28 percent for children aged 2 to 18 with moderate to severe asthma attacks.
