Medicare funds wasted on questionable day treatment centers
More than 90 percent of recent Medicare payments to five state day treatment mental health centers were found to be for highly questionable or unallowable services. Investigators cited billing for coffee klatches for healthy retirement-home residents, with $229 million of $252 million reviewed deemed unacceptable. The finding prompted calls for tighter controls and possible elimination of the benefit.
