Rare 47 star New Mexico flag returns to Alamogordo display
Ward Topping donated a 47 star wool flag celebrating New Mexico statehood to the Tularosa Basin Historical Society Museum in Alamogordo. Curator Kathryn Gren notes few such flags exist and hopes for a formal dedication and protective display. The flag traveled from a Northern California bar where it faded between 1976 and 1982, then prompted Topping to return home.

Weather scientists warn that a dry La Nina winter could worsen 1998 crops in West Texas by preventing ground water recharge. Experts say drought ends require a prolonged rain pattern, and hopeful NASA Topex satellite data suggest Pacific cooling and warming may offset each other.
