Army worms devastate South Carolina hay crops
South Carolina farmers report the worst army worm outbreak in 12 years. Clemson entomologist Randy Griffin notes about a quarter of the state's 300000 acres of hay have been infested, with pasture and Bermuda grass fields destroyed in days. Farm owner Tom Carrigan estimates a third of his 450 acres damaged as hot dry conditions and windborne moths from Florida contribute to the spread. Insecticides offer control but at high cost.
