Soviet Use of Lethal Chemicals Alleged in Afghanistan
Afghan resistance leader Malik Muhammed Hussein Khan testified before U.S. lawmakers that Soviet forces in Afghanistan used gas shells and airborne toxins. State Department reports since 1980 linked mycotoxins like nivalenol to suspected Soviet origins, though evidence remains limited to a single Cambodia leaf sample. The claims echo earlier reports from Laos, Cambodia, and the yellow rain controversy, with fatalities pegged in the thousands to tens of thousands depending on sources.
