Insurance hikes approved for Texas homeowners

The Texas State Board of Insurance on Tuesday approved an average 8.6 percent rise in homeowners premiums with some rates up to 23.1 percent for low deductible plans. Rates take effect March 1, reflecting three years of weather losses including Alicia in 1983 and 1985 damages.

Odessa homeowners face 11 percent insurance rate hike

The State Board of Insurance approved an 11.2 percent average increase for homeowners insurance in 1987. Suspects in cocaine syndicate indicted

A Sandinista official and eight other men were indicted on murder and racketeering charges as part of the Medellin Cartel. The nine suspects include a former Colombian senator and a fugitive drug lord. the cartel allegedly shipped 58 tons of cocaine to the United States, the largest amount cited in a federal indictment. The case was sealed until Aug. 25 and the defendants remain at large.

Remembering a fallen sky diver

Gene Walden, 38, a veteran skydiver and safety adviser, died after a parachute failed to open during a skydiving exhibition at Odessa's Fall Festival. He taught proper packing and jumping methods and helped manage safety for WesTex Sky Sports. Friends call him Mr. Safety and mourn a life spent reducing risky stunts.

Balmorhea submits 1985 86 audit records after gap

Balmorhea officials report 16 months without budget records ending when Mayor Helen Humphries announced the city has submitted 1985 86 financial records to an Odessa accounting firm for auditing. Former City Secretary Julie Campbell failed to keep records from 1982 to 1985, leaving finances in doubt as Water Superintendent C T Gray’s 1985 records aided the audit.
