Democrat Jan Fisher secured a second four year term over Murrell Howell by 15 546 to 9 483. Fisher emphasized efficiency in government and strong law enforcement while noting oil price declines. She projected economic diversification and tax base growth, urging low tax rates and continued support for essential services.
Republican former Gov Bill Clements won the Texas governor race as Democrat Mark White faced heavy baggage negatives including tax raises teacher tests and no pass no play rules. Exit polls showed strong showings for White in Austin Houston and East Texas but turnout and a weather dampened vote favored Clements.
Susan Hammons reports a Tuesday general election in Ector County showing unprecedented split-ticket voting. Democratic Chairwoman K T McLeaish says such levels are unseen and figures leave minds unclear. Polls closed with 25 858 voters casting ballots, 1 777 more than the prior tally.
Sheriff Brookshire spoke Tuesday of being pressured to protect a polling place while reassigning deputies. He received a call he believed came from election judge Rita Hill at the 403rd Precinct poll in the Salinas Community Building and sent deputies, then removed them when the caller wasn’t Hill. She later asked for deputies again.
The Associated Press reports resurgent Democrats gain control of the Senate, capturing eight new seats and leading in others to a projected 55-45 majority, while Republicans pick up eight governorships including Texas Florida Maine and Wisconsin and hold steady in the House. Senate leaders-elect vow cooperation with the president as results roll in.
Incumbent Bryan Henderson retains Precinct 2 commissioner's post while Joe Eddie Hernandez wins Precinct 4 by a comfortable margin. Larry Combest keeps the 19th Congressional District seat and Chunkie Hendrick wins JP spot. No surprises in unopposed races with several state and local results noted and a few area surprises.
