In February 2005 Marine units in Iraq requested mine resistant ambush protected vehicles but no supplier could quickly meet the need. The Marine Corps bought over 2,900 Humvees with extra armor, a stopgap as insurgents grew more capable. Officials say the force plans to buy as many as 3,700 MRAPs with a V shaped hull, leveraging marketplace capacity.
