Energy secretary rejects releasing oil reserve to lower prices

Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman told a House hearing that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve should not be tapped to influence prices. He cited supply and demand rather than market speculation for high oil costs and said the reserve is for physical disruption, not today’s price swings. Prices briefly spiked to around 135 a barrel before easing.

Congress enacts broad farm bill amid veto clash

Congress passed a large farm bill despite President Bush veto, expanding subsidies and food stamps. A printing glitch left 24 pages missing in the vetoed version, prompting a plan to resend the bill with the missing section. The house vote totals were 82-13 in the Senate and 316-108 in the House, with a later 306-110 tally to override again if needed. The White House criticized the process while Democrats argued it was constitutional and legal.
