Construction permits plunge signals ongoing housing slump
Construction of new homes and apartments rose 2.5 percent in April to 1.528 million, but permits for future construction plummeted 8.9 percent to 1.429 million, the sharpest drop in 17 years and the lowest level in a decade. Analyst Bill Hampel notes the permit decline signals housing contraction will persist, despite a recent uptick in actual starts.
