Fifteen Workers Rescued From WIPP Cavern After Outage
Fifteen workers were lifted from a 2150 foot deep cavern at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad New Mexico after a power outage left them stranded for 15 hours. Officials said there was no danger and compared the ordeal to being trapped underground in an elevator. The outage was caused by a malfunction in the subyard that powers the site. The WIPP, a 2.1 billion dollar facility, will store low and intermediate level nuclear waste from military and weapons programs.
