Veteran recalls helping liberate Mauthausen death camp
San Antonio resident William Phelps recalls the 1945 May 5 liberation of Mauthausen outside Linz Austria with two dozen U S soldiers. He describes the shock of seeing emaciated prisoners and fleeing German guards, recalling heavy tank combat during the Battle of the Bulge and a Tiger tank knocked out with his crew. The veteran, 90, travels with the 50 Friends of the Israel Defense Forces to share memories alongside Holocaust survivors and Israeli troops.

Murder charge dropped in Houston against suspect in Austin judge shooting
