Home care cuts push couple to sell their house
SEATTLE AP The red brick ranch with a white picket fence was a dream home for Karen Hammer and Chuck Barzen a decade ago. After Barzen's stroke Hammer handles all care tasks while the state pays her 8.43 an hour. A fall budget cut reduced her pay from about 900 to 300 monthly driving poverty, a repossessed van, and mounting calls from creditors. They are selling the house as many Washington home care clients face similar cuts under the Medicaid program changes aimed at standardizing hours.
