Explosion Leaves West Texas crater after deadly blast
The West Texas town near Dallas suffered a major explosion in its industrial area. The blast killed numerous emergency personnel, mainly West Volunteer Fire Department members, and caused a crater 90 feet wide and at least 10 feet deep. Regulators cited careless storage of ammonium nitrate, poor ventilation, and weak emergency response as factors. The Chemical Safety Board urged stricter standards, while noting Texas had 80 plants storing over 5 tons of ammonium nitrate and 19 near sensitive sites.
