Decoration Day origins and memorial expansion overview
Decoration Day began to honor Civil War dead with grave decorations. On May 30, 1868, General James Garfield spoke at Arlington, after which thousands decorated graves of over 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Post World War I it expanded to all wars, and in 1971 Congress moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May.
