Alpine hospital performs three heart transplants amid donor dispute
Dr. Cooley led a surgical team including Robert Bloodwell Grady Hallman and Neil Abergast as three heart transplants were completed, while Donor status and sterile conditions posed infection risks. Legal and hospital officials discussed the donor situation but no final decision reached. The medical examiner cited rapid procedures and poor communications as factors in confusion. Margie Nicks, widow of the donor, consented to use the heart to save another life. Head administrator Stuckwish, a Duke graduate from Pennsylvania, has maintained Alpine hospital finances, often from his hospital bed amid a heart condition. Communications with outside lines failed late, but were not deemed critical.
