Doctors propose fasting aid for anorexia nervosa patients

Two psychiatrists from Western Psychiatric Institute in Pittsburgh and St George's Hospital Medical School in London report in the American Journal of Psychiatry that encouraging patients to continue fasting can reduce the drive to eat. In a study of eight patients aged 18 to 30 treated from 1977 to 1979, half reached normal weight years later, while only one remained at very low weight. The experts note standard care yields about 70 percent recovery after four years, and stress the patients' need for responsibility and personal agency in treatment.
