National Nurses Week runs May 6 to 12 each year to honor nursing. Since 1896 the ANA and state associations have promoted the profession. Key events include May 12 as International Nurse Day and May 6 as National Recognition Day for Nurses. The sequence covers proposals to presidential proclamations, Congressional actions, and annual observances through 1997.
