U S forces launch major Najaf assault amid clashes

U S led troops raided militiamen hideouts in several cities and clashed in Najaf as 15 Iraqis and one American were killed. Shiite leaders urged Muqtada al-Sadr to disarm and end the stand‑off while authorities vow to press the push to eliminate al Sadr's militia. The Abu Ghraib prison chief promised access for the Red Cross and ministries and apologized for abuse by a small number of soldiers.

Bush seeks 25 billion for next year's war costs

The Bush administration asked Congress for a 25 billion dollar down payment to fund U S operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, a shift from earlier plans to request funds after the November elections. The money would cover early fiscal 2005 needs as the new budget year begins October 1, with Congress likely to be adjourned and the Army facing cash flow risk.

Bush condemns prisoner abuse in Arab TV interviews

President Bush told Al Arabiya and another Arab network that Americans are appalled by abuse and deaths of Iraqi prisoners. He promised justice, said the Middle East must understand this was horrible, and defended his confidence in Defense Secretary Rumsfeld while criticizing how details reached him. The scandal deepens as lawmakers press for testimony and a Senate resolution condemns the abuses. The tally of prisoner deaths blamed on Americans rises to 14.
