On October 7, 1990, Linnie Clark told her son she wanted to go home. The 84-year-old Odessan had not spoken in nearly 13 years, marking a poignant moment in her long illness or confinement.
President Bush, 66, jogged at Camp David Saturday afternoon, was evacuated to Bethesda Naval Hospital for atrial fibrillation. Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said he is relaxed, comfortable, alert, stable, with no heart attack and no transfer of power contemplated.
Masterson, longtime Odessan and 16 year Odessa College Board member, died Saturday morning from a heart attack while driving. He was 75 and had heart problems in recent years. The fatal attack occurred about 9 40 a.m. as his white Ford four door sedan rolled over a curb near Hancock Avenue. He was rushed to Medical Center Hospital by ambulance.
Odessa voters elect W R Hill to the city at large with 61.33 percent, 3770 votes, defeating A Dub Kennedy 1966 votes, James JB Hardin 255, and Lonnie Sigmon 156. About 15.5 percent turnout of 40 223 registered voters. Kennedy leaves District 4 as winners sworn in.
Political newcomer Bob Slider captured the District 4 seat with 61.69 percent of the vote, defeating At-large Councilman Omer Bishop who received 39.31 percent. The two year term covers part of southeast Odessa. Slider, 49, an optometrist, takes oath at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
A 60 year old Odessa resident aims to run May 4 for the city council seat. He argues his mayoral ally Bishop opposed firing City Manager Bill Brown, hindering council effectiveness. Bishop, elected at-large in 1989, previously served in district roles.
Crawford, 50, defeated two challengers in District 3 to win a second two year term on the Odessa City Council. He captured 838 votes or 60.16 percent, Dan Kalenak 420 votes 30.15 percent, and Ray Wyman 135 votes 9.69 percent. Boundaries cover northwest Odessa north of 16th Street and west of Andrews. Crawford, appointed in 1989, touted progress on waste water issues and cooperation with Ector County. He supported firing City Manager Bill Brown earlier. Wyman, 64, ran as reform candidate after a Parks and Recreation firing. Kalenak, 66, sought office to serve the community.
Five years and more than 1.5 million dollars transformed a vacant slab into Noel Heritage Plaza at Fourth and Fifth streets between Lincoln and Washington. Mayor Lorraine Bonner calls it a catalyst to draw businesses and people to downtown Odessa, a crown jewel near government buildings, the Ector County Library, and Lincoln Tower. Grace King of Noel Investments notes the city plans to use the park to rejuvenate downtown, a project conceived in 1986 by W. D. Noel, Ellen Noel, and former City Manager John Harrison to provide a shared green space for Odessans.
