Former Gov Bill Clements won the Republican nomination with 58 percent of early votes while Gov Mark White led the Democratic field with 53 percent. In Ector County White had 44 percent and Clements 57 percent of the votes cast. Party leaders cautioned that White faces a difficult November rematch.
Democratic candidate Joe Eddie Hernandez won the Precinct 4 nomination with 987 votes, edging Willie Hammond Jr. and Thomas Perkins in a three way race. He vows to remove trash from county rights of way as his top priority if elected and will face unopposed Republican Roy Gentry in November. Gentry campaigned on diversifying Ector County’s economy and efficient hospital operations. Other races included Precinct 2 where Bryan Henderson won the Republican nomination and will face Democrat Tony Chavez in November.
Ector County reports a record 6,535 Republican ballots cast on Saturday with six precincts low or out of ballots. Dem turnout reached 5,889 votes, about 9.94 percent of 59,218 registered voters, while party chairwoman K T McLeaish predicted stronger Democratic participation in the next count.
In Colombo Sri Lanka an AirLanka jetliner exploded at the airport as passengers boarded killing 21 and injuring dozens. Victims include Japanese and several Britons French and Germans. Government blames Tamil militants though no group claims responsibility. National Security Minister Lalith Athulathmudali called it plain terrorism.
President Reagan called for full accounting of the Soviet nuclear accident as Japan held an emergency cabinet session over reports of radiation in rain across Tokyo and central cities. Larry Speakes cited Japanese officials noting low contamination levels, while WHO said precautions were unnecessary outside the Soviet Union.
