Dhia al Shweiri, a 30 year old former detainee turned al Mahdi Army fighter, says U S guards stripped prisoners naked and humiliated them. Memorial mourns eight Baumholder soldiers killed near Baghdad
At Baumholder base in Germany the community plans memorial services after eight soldiers from the 1st Armored Division were killed in a single attack near Baghdad. The deaths, part of the bloodiest month since the Iraq invasion, deepen anxiety as families await official identifications and mourn the loss amid ongoing deployments and sudden changes to homecomings. Local servicemen and residents express shock and sorrow, with some recalling a deceased soldier described as churchgoing and a good father. A base barbecue for the unit was canceled and funds redirected to bereaved families.

Saddam-era general not in charge, chairman says
U S military chief Gen Richard Myers disputed reports that Maj Gen Jassim Mohammed Saleh leads the Fallujah force. Myers said Saleh has not been vetted and may not command. UN head Annan echoed that those who committed crimes should not join security forces. Marines have not indicated loss of confidence in the general.
