Millions of gallons of sewage have vanished into underground lava tubes beneath a seven acre McCloud pond since 1979. Dye traces show no contamination in nearby water but officials fear eventual discharge into the McCloud or Sacramento rivers. Authorities face a 1983 deadline to fix the cracks found after 1979 drainage exposing up to seven inch by three inch gaps. Funding is sought to cover an estimated 300000 cost.
