Michael Jackson, 45, left the Santa Maria courthouse after pleading not guilty to molestation charges in a subdued exit. About 300 fans cheered outside, banners waved, and a crowd-control fence had been installed to prevent a repeat of the January scene. Jackson thanked fans worldwide and blew kisses as a police escort moved his black GMC Yukon XL away.

Michael Jackson pleaded not guilty to a 10 count grand jury indictment in Santa Barbara County. Parachuting base jumpers cause scare in Salt Lake City
A 27-year-old man and two companions leaped from the 27 story American Towers, but the jumper got tangled on a light pole and hung about 15 feet above the street. Guards assisted him and he was ticketed for trespassing with up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Notre Dame president to retire next year after 18 years
The Rev. Edward A. Malloy announced Friday he would retire in June 2005 after 18 years as Notre Dame president. He plans a sabbatical to resume teaching writing and preaching, shifting focus as the second leader in 53 years to depart. He will be succeeded by Rev. John S. Jenkins, a university vice president.
