Custody Transfer Ends Four Year Baby Richard Battle
In Schaumburg Illinois the Kirchners reclaim custody of the four year old once labeled Baby Richard after a long fight that drew in governors legislators and courts up to the U.S. Supreme Court. The boy sobbed as his biological parents Otakar and Daniela Kirchner took him from the adoptive parents in front of their suburban Chicago home amid about a dozen officers. The case, once deemed illegal due to the birth mother’s statement the child was dead, sparked national debate on adoption rights and the best interests of the child. The Kirchners had proposed a gradual transfer with counseling and visits but insisted on immediate custody after months of failed negotiations. The adoptive parents Jane and John Doe Kirchner were represented by Laura Kaster.
