In daylight chaos the crowd confronts police as fires blaze across south central LA. Looters plunder stores while black youths clash with whites and rocks fly toward firefighters. State troopers struggle to control fast spreading violence in a city gripped by riot.

Odessa officials announced a water deal to funnel pre treated Dynagen plant waste water into the city sewer system to cut costs. Plant Manager Tim Gorman said council approval would preserve the General Tire Odessa operation and save between six and seven million dollars. Basin officials, Odessa law enforcers, and community leaders said they were shocked and saddened by the acquittal of four white Los Angeles police officers in the Rodney King beating. District 1 Councilwoman Jo Ann Davenport said the verdict set back equal rights, and she lamented the impact on the African American community.
The city will offer Dynagen technical assistance to address the plant's environmental problems. Reactions were largely positive among employees and related businesses who see the move as progress toward ending uncertainty. Freddie Sanchez of United Rubber Workers Local 1124 welcomed the city Dynagen collaboration and anticipated state action as pivotal.
