Scratch Academy founder Jam Master Jay’s teaching turntable art
New York AP notes Jam Master Jay helped turn DJing into an educational craft. In 2002 he and two partners founded Scratch Academy to teach the tricks of the turntable, changing a field once learned by word of mouth. Jay emphasized mastering basics to speed learning and musical development. Run-DMC popularized rap beats with Jay scratching, later layering samples with Rick Rubin to create richer textures as rap gained mainstream success.
