Elian’s relatives resist signing pledge amid INS bid to remove him
Lawyers for Elian's family and the U.S. government met without resolving the stalemate over custody. INS warned that Elian's temporary stay could end Thursday if the great uncle Lazaro Gonzalez does not sign a written guarantee to obey a court ruling. Family spokesman Armando Gutierrez accused authorities of political pressure while noting the boy remains sheltered at his great uncle's home and fears repatriation. Jorge Mas Santos urged cautious government action to avoid provoking the exile community.
