Rescue called off for entangled right whale Kingfisher
An endangered right whale known as Kingfisher, entangled in fishing gear, moved into deep ocean waters 18 miles off Cape Lookout. Scientists abandoned Friday's rescue plan and said they may try again if the whale returns toward the coast. The 34 foot yearling is one of about 300 remaining and remains tethered by lines, risking fatal constriction. The team from UNC Wilmington and NOAA had planned to sedate and disentangle the animal using a Cape Fear vessel, but shifting currents and darkness halted the effort.
