GOP bill to expand alien farm worker program draws fire
In Washington state apple country farmers struggle to hire workers. The proposed guest worker plan would grant temporary visas to 40,000 people over two years for five regions, sparking fierce criticism from the Clinton administration, unions, and farmworker advocates. Critics call it a cheap labor fix while supporters say farmers face a labor crisis and need flexibility to handle local shortages. The bill would also reduce two visa programs and includes wage withholding to encourage workers to return home.
