Texas Poll Finds Texans Feel Financial Strains Despite Optimism

A Texas Poll of 1000 adults by the Scripps Data Center from Feb 6–28 shows 44 percent feel financially worse off than last year with 49 percent believing they will be better off next year. Only 28 percent expect to retire at a reasonable age, while 44 percent feel less optimistic this year and last. Mine Yucel of the Federal Reserve notes war worries dampen optimism. Dallas lost 20,000 jobs in 2002 and Texas’ recession effects linger. The report cites stock market conditions and sector concentration as factors shaping sentiment.
