Water district weighs drought response and salt in West Texas
The Colorado River Municipal Water District cautions about balancing water diversion to protect quality and drinking safety. Spence Reservoir holds 27,000 tons of chlorides since 1969, far above the 300 ppm limit, prompting mixing with saltier sources from Lake J.B. Thomas or Lake O.H. Ivie. Officials warn against quick fixes as brine wells, many unregulated, threaten supplies for Odessa, Big Spring, Snyder, Midland, San Angelo and others.
