Oil prices rise as OPEC pact boosts Permian activity

West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to 19.03 a barrel on the NYMEX as markets priced in a seven week high after a Norwegian shutdown and a fresh OPEC agreement. Local oilmen, including Earnest Thomas and Eddie Watts, say prices above 19 dollars encourage more secondary recovery work and industry activity in the Permian Basin.

West Texas Fire Weather Sparks 42 Grass Fires in 4 Days

West Texas remains dry as rain forecasts waver amid a rash of grass fires. Ector County reports 42 grass blazes in four days, with six more in 24 hours ending about 9 a.m. today, including a mobile home fire at Doris Beloat's residence in west Odessa. Midland crews battled 12 fires including an arson strike at 1805 East Maple Ave. The shell of the vacant house was damaged while the upper floor of a nearby two story home also burned.

Big Bend Fire Brings Evacuations in Park’s 45 Year History

A wildfire in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park has scorched more than 600 acres and prompted evacuations of over 100 campers. Ed Wood of the Forest Service says hot spots near a barn end remain a concern as temperatures near 90 and winds from the west threaten a wider outbreak. Ten crews of 20 firefighters, plus two park helicopters, are on the line near Blue Creek Ranch after the blaze was reported Saturday afternoon near the 5,500 foot level along the Blue Creek drainage. No injuries reported.

Banks post record profits as failures rise in 1988 mix

U S banks earned a record 25.3 billion in 1988 while 221 banks failed, FDIC chair L William Seidman said preliminary data show. Quarterly profits rose to 6.7 billion, beating prior records as the economy grew and oil and farm states faced weakness.

Rules strap fuel tank owners

A Texas child sits in a blue swing as more than 60 empty steel fuel storage tanks sit on three acres behind the Nay family home in East 385 Ranch Estates south of Odessa. The EPA's December 1988 underground tank rules require bare steel tanks to be removed and replaced with safety-coated models to prevent leaks. Tank owner Tom Ervin says the abandoned tanks pose no health hazard and are sold after steam cleaning to other buyers.

Stores pull Chilean fruit after cyanide find in grapes

Stores expect higher fruit prices and refunds for customers who bought affected items.
