West Texas oilfield academy trains Russian and Ukrainian engineers
A Commerce and Energy Department coordinated program in West Texas helps international oilfield trainees. James Mied, based in Arlington, and Oilfield Exporting Team joined to boost technology transfer and local development after last summer’s U S Russia energy summit in Houston. The academy, started three years ago by West Texas energy leaders, trains students in secondary recovery methods and aims to have graduates return home to hire Texas-based services and later send engineers for training at ATPA. The first class graduated late last year, a group of 10 petroleum accountants from China.

Mellencamp song To Washington provides history view
John Mellencamp frames the track as a history overview not an anti war protest. He cites a new man in the White House and says the song argues for fighting with many, not for oil. The lyric spans Clinton era events, the Lewinsky scandal, 2000 Florida voting turmoil, and National Guard duty debates.

University President Larry Faulkner pledges to keep the McDonald Observatory open despite proposed state cuts of about 12.5 percent across agencies. Heggarty says funding will be found, with science programs and education largely protected, while older telescope operations face reductions. The Hobby-Eberly telescope remains a priority, costing 18.5 million dollars and serving as a model for low-cost telescope development, supported by donations and grants alongside state funds.
