Utah surgeon seeks FDA trial of artificial heart in humans
William DeVries, a Utah cardiac surgeon, has asked the FDA for permission to implant an artificial heart in a human this spring. The device would be used if a patient cannot be removed from the heart lung bypass pump during open heart surgery. If approved, candidates would move to Salt Lake City for postoperative care and live tethered to the drive system at home. The project, led by Willem Kolff, plans to test Jarvik 7 with potential survival months to years.
