Walter Reed Hospital’s origin and namesake history
The Army’s top medical facility began treating wounded in 1909 at Walter Reed General Hospital and later Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Eisenhower frequented the hospital and died there in the Eisenhower Suite. Maj Walter Reed, the namesake, studied yellow fever after Mosquitos’ transmission was discovered. Maj William C. Borden operated on Reed in 1902. Reed died, inspiring the 80‑bed hospital’s dedication six years later.
