Skelton's Release Held After 1989 acquittal ruling
More than two months after being acquitted by an appeals court for the 1982 bombing death of Joe Lee Neal, Odessan John C. Skelton remains in a Texas prison. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled December 13, 1989, there was insufficient evidence to convict the 58-year-old Skelton, overturning an Ector County district court jury. The district attorney filed a motion for rehearing but no action has been taken, with neither side guaranteeing a release date or further steps. The DA's Office and staff have pressed to keep Skelton behind bars.
