Escape pair of inmates captured after months long manhunt ends
David Sweat, captured near the Canadian border in northern New York, was shot twice and hospitalized in stable condition. Authorities confirmed his fellow escapee Richard Matt was killed two days earlier. The two had fled Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6 after using power tools to breach cells and escape through the prison's walls. Governor Cuomo hailed the end of a three week, high risk pursuit that involved hundreds of officers across multiple agencies. Surveillance, peppersprayed trails, and a manhunt in dense woods defined the final days of the case. Authorities say Sweat faces charges including escape and burglary and will be charged after his recovery.
