Italy seeks extradition of 13 CIA officers in rendition case
Italian prosecutors want 13 CIA officials extradited over the 2003 abduction of a radical Islamist cleric and his transfer to Egypt for torture. An alleged Milan station chief is among them. Interpol aid was requested to locate the Americans as the case raises sovereignty questions in a close ally. The Milan prosecutor said arrests were announced last week and sought assistance from the U.S. and Egypt.

Vatican Moves Beatification of Pope John Paul II Forward
In Rome the beatification process for Pope John Paul II was launched at St. John Lateran, with Cardinal Camillo Ruini presiding. Pope Benedict XVI waived the five year wait, expediting the path to sainthood for the Polish-born pontiff who died April 2 after nearly 27 years as leader of the church. In Jerusalem an Israeli soldier born in the U.S. was sentenced to 56 days in jail for refusing orders to destroy empty Gaza buildings ahead of a summer evacuation, a move aimed at pressuring troops over the Gaza withdrawal. Cpl Avi Bieber, from Passaic New Jersey, is celebrated by opponents of the plan for his stance against the demolition operation.
